As an academic who has taught U.S. health care policy for over two decades and published numerous studies about health insurance and health care markets, I did not expect to be a victim of a system I thought I knew. My work has given me ample access to state regulators and cabinet officials, C-suite executives from the health care delivery and insurance organizations and dozens of dedicated professionals responsible for the functioning of health care in New Jersey. If anyone was immune to the Kafkaesque features of our health care system, it would be someone like me. Alas, I have no such immunity.
