The first census to find out how many doctors practice in New Jersey, and which areas of the state might not have enough physicians, is under way.

Over the next few weeks, each of the state's 30,000 licensed doctors should receive a 15-minute, confidential survey designed to find out where New Jersey's doctors practice and what their specialties are.

It will be used to "build the case for more federal health dollars for New Jersey communities that do not have enough doctors," as well as guide decisions about medical education and licensing, said Joel Cantor, director of the Center for State Health Policy at Rutgers University, which is conducting the survey.
